Famous for its appearance in popular films and television shows, from Four Weddings and a Funeral to Midsomer Murders and Cuckoo, Amersham has a rich history. Comprising two areas—Old Amersham and Amersham-on-the-Hill—the town dates back to pre-Anglo-Saxon times and was featured in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Its appeal as a filming location is broadly recognised in the industry. Beyond film, Amersham has been a setting for popular British TV shows like “Midsomer Murders,” “Poirot,” and “Jonathan Creek.” The town's picturesque streets provide an atmospheric setting that complements gripping storylines.
Amersham itself seems to be derived from the name of an early Anglo-Saxon ruler. Earlier spellings of Amersham are Agmodesham and Elmodesham, after Ealmond or Ealhmund, reputed King of Kent in 784.
Amersham is mentioned in the Doomsday survey of 1086 and in the year AD 1200 whereupon King John granted a charter for a weekly market, an annual fair and two members of Parliament as a “Pocket Borough” were elected to represent the town.
The earliest origins of Amersham are undocumented. The surrounding Chiltern Hills were densely forested and an easy hiding place for robbers and bandits. Stewards of the Chiltern Hundreds were appointed to control this lawlessness and to protect the area from Vikings who raided parts of the Chilterns between 800-1016.
It is an unwanted and for some, an unexpected official accolade: the affluent towns of Amersham and Chesham in the Chilterns are among England's very worst places for social mobility.
Amersham (/ˈæmərʃəm/ AM-ər-shəm) is a market town and civil parish in Buckinghamshire, England, in the Chiltern Hills, 27 miles (43 km) northwest of central London, 15 miles (24 km) south-east of Aylesbury and 9 miles (14 km) north-east of High Wycombe. Amersham is part of the London commuter belt.
Details. Amersham plc was a UK pharmaceutical company, specialising in medical diagnostics and life science products. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was once a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index but was purchased by General Electric; it is now part of GE Healthcare.
The first recorded reference to Chesham is under the Old English name Cæstæleshamm, meaning "the river-meadow at the pile of stones" around 970 in the will of Lady Ælfgifu, who has been identified with the former wife of King Eadwig.
Henley-on-Thames, Wallingford, Dorchester-on-Thames, Thame and Watlington, are all home to a variety of different Midsomer Murder film locations, which can be explored with their very own Midsomer walking trails.
Littleworth Common is home to the Blackwood Arms, the setting for two Midsomer Murders episodes. It made its debut appearance in 2015 in 'Murder by Magic' in which the opening scene sees DCI Barnaby having a drink with his wife Sarah in the Blackwood Arms' garden.
The show is filmed in the town of Amersham (including the historic 'old town' area), and the adjoining village of Chesham Bois in Buckinghamshire. Some of the outside scenes are also filmed in and around Chesham, Chartridge, Farnham, and Thame Oxfordshire.
The rectory (and to a slightly lesser extent the vicarage, which is often smaller) was traditionally a significant house, built for an important figure in the community. Typically, a rectory has four large, high-ceiling reception rooms, ideal for entertaining and six or seven bedrooms.
A rectory is the housing that a church organization provides for a minister or priest to live in. Most rectories are conveniently close to the church. The official name of a minister who lives in a rectory is a rector, a clergy member of either the Episcopal, Catholic, or Anglican churches.
It depends on how important the rail/tube connections are to you. Amersham has the Chiltern line as well as the metropolitan line. Pretty much the same in terms of schools and local amenities. Chesham Bois is pretty but a drive from most shops/amenities and both Chesham and Amersham stations.
The nearest airport to Amersham is London Heathrow (LHR) Airport which is 15.4 miles away. Other nearby airports include London Luton (LTN) (18.1 miles), London City (LCY) (30.9 miles), London Gatwick (LGW) (40.6 miles) and London Stansted (STN) (40.8 miles).
