Hurstville is named from a combination of the Old English word "hurst," meaning a wooded hill or eminence, and "ville," meaning town. The name, meaning "town on a wooded hill," was chosen by a school inspector in 1876 for the local school and subsequently adopted for the railway station in 1884.
