Janet's Foss in North Yorkshire is named after local folklore, which identifies "Janet" (or Jennet) as the Queen of the Fairies who inhabited a small cave behind the waterfall. The term "Foss" or "Force" is derived from Old Norse, referring to a waterfall.
The pool was traditionally used for sheep dipping, an event which drew in local village inhabitants for the social occasion. The name Janet (sometimes Jennet) is believed to refer to a fairy queen reputed to inhabit a cave at the rear of the fall.
The name comes from the same root as the word swallow (the Old English 'suala') and means swirling and rushing. Here at the Foss, the riverbed is made up of horizontal limestone slabs. The Swale plunged from one to the next in a waterfall, known in Yorkshire as a 'force', or 'Foss'.

The pools of Janet's Foss are a popular wild swimming spot, and there is also a cave located just up the bank from the water. To get there, you have to wade through the pool. The path leading to Gordale Scar continues past the falls (they will be on your right), and upwards.
