"Kingsway" is a common name for roads and, in the case of the famous London thoroughfare opened in 1905, it was named to honor King Edward VII, with the royal procession marking its inauguration. Other "Kingsway" roads, such as in Edmonton, Canada, were named to honor King George VI.
During the 1939 royal tour of Canada, 70,000 people lined the specially constructed grandstands to see the royal motorcade with King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, and Prime Minister King, the street was renamed in honour of King George VI.
Kingsway was the name that the British gave to the pivotal road in Delhi that runs from Rashtrapati Bhavan through India Gate to the National Stadium. After independence, Jawaharlal Nehru's government translated the word “Kingsway” into Hindi and so the road became Rajpath.
