The numbers have steadily decreased over the past years. It is estimated that there were around 700 000 Hindus and Sikhs in Afghanistan in the 70s, around 220 000 in 1992 and approximately 150 at the end of 2021, compared to around 400 in the beginning of the same year.

What religion was Afghanistan before Islam?
In ancient and classical periods, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, followed by Buddhism were the primary religions in the region. Islam gradually became the primary religion in the region after first being introduced in the 7th century A.D., when the Rashidun Caliphate conquered parts of the region.
Hinduism is the second-largest religion in Pakistan, with 2.17% of the population being Hindus, around 5.2 million people, according to the 2023 Pakistani census. However, the Pakistan Hindu Council claims 8-10 million Hindus, making up 4% of the population.
