HPV can survive on clothing and other inanimate objects (fomites) for days, as it is resistant to drying and heat. While the virus can persist on fabrics, infection primarily spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact, making transmission from clothing rare.
HPV are highly environment-resistant which facilitates their transmission within households via fomites. Papillomaviruses can survive on surfaces for at least 5–7 days.
The flu virus can live on clothing like gloves and scarves for two or three days, while diarrhea-causing viruses, such as rotavirus and norovirus, may thrive for as many as four weeks.
HPV can survive for months to years on surfaces. Infection often requires direct contact with the viral particles. This can ensue through either direct contact via a plantar wart or indirect contact via fomites (such as socks, shoes, towels and sports equipment).
HPV infection can be detected on inanimate objects, such as clothing or environmental surfaces. However, transmission is not known to occur by this route.
Under such conditions, HPV can survive for about one day to even a week. Many people, due to a lack of understanding of how long HPV can survive outside the body, tend to be subjective and careless. This can make you easily infected without knowing it.
Some STDs, such as herpes and hepatitis B, can survive outside the body for several days and still be contagious. Other STDs, such as HIV and syphilis, cannot survive outside the body for any time.
Contact with contaminated surfaces, like clothing, can transfer germs from your hands to your mouth, nose, or eyes when you touch your face. The flu virus can be transferred onto clothes when someone coughs, sneezes or touches the fabric, leaving behind trace amounts.
Bacteria have been known to survive on textiles for prolonged periods of time, while the duration of stay depends on the type of fiber. Compared to polyester a higher prevalence of bacteria has been reported on blends. Further, binding of bacteria to polyester was observed to be 1,000 times higher than cotton.
HPV is not killed by common hand sanitizers or disinfectants, increasing the possibility of the virus being transferred via non-living infectious agents called fomites. HPV vaccines can prevent the most common types of infection.
HPV is not passed on through kissing, hugging or sharing towels, clothing and everyday items such as cutlery or a toilet seat. Using condoms (male or female) every time you have vaginal or anal sex is the most effective way to avoid getting genital warts, other than being celibate (not having sex).
– HPV infections can often display no visible symptoms, even if the virus is active. Because of this, even without any visible symptoms, HPV infections are still highly contagious. Is HPV contagious while it is dormant? – when the HPV infection is inactive, or dormant, it cannot be spread.
HPV is susceptible to a variety of disinfectants including “… 90% ethanol for at least 1 minute, 2% glutaraldehyde, 30% Savlon [chlorhexidine gluconate and cetrimide], and/or 1% sodium hypochlorite can disinfect the pathogen….”
SURVIVAL OUTSIDE HOST: HPV is resistant to heat and drying, and is able to survive on inanimate objects such as clothing and laboratory equipment that have come in contact with infected patients, although the precise survival time is unknown Footnote 1Footnote 11.
Non-enveloped viruses, such as norovirus, HPV, and rotaviruses, are more resistant to pH and temperature changes. Furthermore, they are completely unaffected by some disinfectants, including alcohol. The alcohol is unable to penetrate the protein shell or capsid that protects the nucleic acid core.
Secondhand clothes can carry a high number of infectious pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, due to the skin microbiome of the previous owners. Germs like Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, E. coli, norovirus, and fungi causing athlete's foot and ringworm can be found on secondhand clothing.
For everyday loads, regular washing with detergent is usually sufficient to remove dirt and some germs. However, sanitizing becomes important when someone in your household is sick, or when washing items like towels, bedding, or underwear that are prone to bacteria buildup.
This fact put their health at risk of some microbial infection including bacteria, fungi, parasitic and viral infections. Some skin diseases such as dermatitis, scabies and fungal diseases can be transmitted by wearing unwashed second-hand clothes (1, 2).
Research shows both influenza A and B viruses survive for 24 to 48 hours on hard surfaces like stainless steel, doorknobs and plastic, but survive for less than 12 hours on cloth, paper and tissues.
It is also best not to borrow or share used towels, washcloths, razors, underwear or swimsuits from others since they may play a part in the infrequent nonsexual transmission of genital HPV.
Dear Paranoid: There's no evidence that you can contract a sexually transmitted disease through the washer, but if someone has had the flu or a cold, there is a slight possibility that germs can be transferred through insufficiently disinfected clothing.
Other surfaces, such as clothing, gynecological equipment, and sex toys, can also harbor and spread HPV. Bleach, a dilute solution of sodium hypochlorite — a chemical compound made up of the elements sodium, oxygen, and chlorine — is an effective disinfectant against HPV.
HPV does not live long on towels and requires skin-to-skin contact for transmission. It is unlikely to spread through towels unless they are directly contaminated with infected fluids.
