Located near the Russian border, it offers dramatic scenery, fresh air, and authentic Georgian culture. It is best visited over at least one overnight stay to avoid long, exhausting 12-hour, one-day roundtrips from Tbilisi.
If you are visiting Georgia in summer, Kazbegi is the natural choice for an overnight stay in this area. There is no real reason to stay in Gudauri outside of winter. Pros: More guesthouses; other points of interest such as Gergeti Trinity Church; budget-friendly options for food and drink.
How Many Days to Spend in Kazbegi? I highly recommend you spend at least 3 full days in Kazbegi (4 nights). That way, you will have time to explore the town itself with 2 spare days for day trips.
To be honest, the Kazbegi run is one of my least favorite trips to operate. It's very beautiful, of course, but it's very standardized. There's really only the handful of sightseeing spots on the way, which are always swarming with tourists and touts.

Every guesthouse in Kazbegi can get you a driver, many of them with a 4WD car. Or look around the "bus station" where usually some local drivers are waiting for customers. No need to book anything before you arrive.
Taxi drivers wait around the bus station in Kazbegi and in the lot opposite the main square (by the Alexander Kazbegi statue). It is much easier to find a driver in the morning. Expect to pay around 50-70 GEL per car (or 15-20 GEL per person) return, including around 45 minutes waiting time at the church.

Kazbegi is the better choice. Gudauri is quite busy/primarily a ski resort and not at all a peaceful vibe. Rooms is a cool hotel, but there are lots of others these days with nice facilities and similar views... InTourist, Step Inn, etc.
