Swimming is generally prohibited in Central Park’s lakes, ponds, and the Reservoir (e.g., The Lake, The Pool, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir) due to safety, health risks from, and conservation of, the water bodies. The water can contain harmful bacteria or toxins from algae, and the, often, deep, undocumented, or unsafe, depths, and, in some cases, steep, walls, of, the, reservoirs, make, them, dangerous.
Summer (June–September): The Olympic-sized Gottesman Pool, operated in partnership with NYC Parks, is open for swimming. The indoor gathering space, overlook, Kempner Boardwalk, and surrounding landscapes remain open for visitors throughout the day.
In New York City, however, centuries of hazardous dumping, combined with an outdated sewer system, have made it a contemporary anathema to consider swimming in any of the city's waterways.
As always, Park visitors should never enter the Park's water bodies or come into contact with the water. The toxins found in HABs can be harmful to dogs as well, so please follow all dog-walking rules and etiquette, as outlined by NYC Parks.
The main concern about Central Park is the wildlife, especially coyotes. The park does have night security randomly driving around, and most people who stay there overnight are just looking for a place to sleep.

Is it illegal to sleep in Central Park?
Central Park does not allow camping of any kind. The park closes at 1am until 6am. Tents, hammocks, open flames or grills ... Are not permitted in Central Park, due to its proximity to various air spaces.
It's extremely unlikely that you'll get mugged in NYC, but it does happen from time to time to a minority of people. If you take out a giant stack of 20s or 100-dollar bills to pay for something, you might catch someone's attention. This person may want to take your money from you (again, this is rare).
I wouldn't recommend walking around Harlem or the Bronx at night; it's better to take a taxi. I am often asked about places that should not be visited, but it's difficult to generalise. As a tourist, you should generally avoid the South Bronx, Mott Haven, Hunts Point or Fordham.

According to the marine sciences section of the DEP, the channel is swift, with water moving as fast as four knots, just as it does in the Hudson River on the other side of Manhattan. That speed can push casual swimmers out to sea. A few people drown in the waters around New York City each year.
Never go out onto the ice of any Central Park water body—and don't let your dog go out either! Falling into frigid water can cause life-threatening hypothermia within minutes. If you see someone in danger on, in, or near a Central Park water body, call 911.
Walk south into park. Be surrounded by the city as you fish for pumpkinseed and bluegill sunfish, largemouth bass, and carp. Respect all fences and stay out of closed landscapes.
The second largest man-made body of water in the park, the Lake provides wonderful opportunities for viewing its abundant flora and fauna from rowboats, which are available for rent during the warmer months at the Central Park Boathouse.
